The 1st Winner of The AprilCentaur Prize.

Emike Odion-Osigwe - The Egusi Base.

In "The Egusi Base,” Emike handles with narrative precision, the mental gymnastics a person, timid by indoctrination, goes through before uttering a word.
In their mind, like the protagonist here, every alternate universe or reality is assessed before making a decision because the stakes are often exaggerated to the very lengths of life and death.
This short fiction is highly reminiscent of a brand of African parenting that borders on subtle psychological assaults on one's mental balance, even though lots of African kids still turn out fine in the end.
Yet, quick therapy sessions might reveal an underlying suppression of self-expression, the very thing a nation needs to demand justice and equity from its leaders.
The Egusi Base stands out for its eagle-eyed relatability, its interesting blend of narrative perspectives, its seemingly effortless comical relief, a magical cliffhanger that does justice to its brewed-up tension and a style of writing that ultimately serves the story.
It's been an honour reading this piece.
